intercultural -artifact.





A diaspora is a dispersal of people from their homelands. Throughout our world's history, there have been many diasporic groups. For examples, diasporas occurred because of religious persecutions, the Irish potato famine, after the Holocaust, the native Americans journey west, African slaves to America, and the movement of Jewish people. These mass migrations occur under four specific elements. These elements are...

1. A diaspora is a scattering of people, voluntary or not, from one place to at least two destinations. 
2. The group of people must have some relationship to an actual or imagined homeland. They have a notion with a particular homeland, which they are being taken away from. 
3. The group has a self-awareness of their own identity. 
4. The diaspora is multigenerational and must exist over at least two generations. 

In the picture on top, many people are making their way from their homeland to a safer place to live. Years ago, when one did not follow the set religious standard or beliefs, they were often forced to leave their hometown. The people above are fleeing from religious persecution in hopes of finding a better place to live and practice their beliefs freely. 
In the picture on the bottom, the people are suffering from the potato famine in Ireland. With little to eat, they were forced to move elsewhere to live a better life. Many Irish people moved to the East coast of the United States to start completely over with their families.

As mentioned in the previous blog, culture is the way of life developed and shared by a group of people and passed down from generation. Our culture depends on where were are from, the family we are born into, and the society we grow up with. As we interact with others and begin to mimic their actions as children, we start to socially construct our culture.  Intercultural communication involves the interaction between members of different cultures. These cultures can be defined and distinguished in terms of race, ethnic, or socioeconomic differences. 
Often times people are able to experience different cultures and learn more about their own cultures when they travel to different places in the world. Culture is often defined and determined by the continent, country, state, city, or town you live in. Living in the United States, we are accustomed to busy lives, meals on the road, and our own personal space. Americans often experience culture shock when they visit other countries and are exposed to different traditions, values, and actions. I have traveled to many different U.S. states, Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Italy, and Ecuador. I have experienced culture shock in all of these places and often times feel a little uncomfortable getting use to various customs. 
The biggest shock I have experienced traveling has been in Ecuador. I went to Quito, Ecuador for Christmas three years ago to visit my brother, who was studying abroad. When my parents and I met his host family, we were greeted with warm hugs and kisses on both cheeks. After a long flight, I was no expecting this gesture, but became used to it by the end of the trip. Throughout our trip, I saw meat hanging and being sold on the sides of the street, I saw little boys walking around trying to shine shoes, and i saw the respect the people showed for everyone. Often times when we would visit churches, my mom and I had to put these pieces of cloth around our legs because our skirts were not below our knees. The respect these people showed for God and others was incredible. 
Being there over Christmas break, I was fortunate enough to be able to share Christmas lunch and a present exchange with them. For a typical Christmas meal at home, we usually have ham with a bunch of side and a plethora of desserts, ranging from cutout cookies to cake. For lunch in Ecuador, we had fish soup, accompanied by a cheese soup. It was very different to experience this odd meal. At first I was skeptical, but it ended up being very good. When we were opening presents, I was surprised at how happy they were to receive strawberry and blueberry jam. However, apparently they do not have jam in Ecuador. After the dad had opened one of his presents, he did this odd snapping thing with his fingers. Even though it seemed odd to my parents, my brother and I recognized it easily. The all boys high school were my brother went to school always did the same thing when they though they had done something "cool." I asked my brother about and it and what it meant, and he told me they do that in Ecuador to call one of their children. It was very interesting to see how two different cultures could use the same hand signal in daily life, but they meant completely different things.

intercultural - definitional.


CULTURE: the integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generation (Merriam Webster Dictionary). 
CULTURE: the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc. (dictionary.com)
CULTURE: an integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for symbolic thought and social learning (wikipedia.com).

In the study of communication and according to Tubbs and Moss, culture means "a way of life developed and shared by a group of people and passed down from generation to generation." Culture is composed of "religious and political systems, customs, and language as well as tools, clothing, buildings, and works of art." While many may believe that we are born with our culture, we are actually born INTO it. We learn our culture, it is not innate. Because of this, culture is commonly said to be socially constructed. When we are born into the world we learn how to act and learn what is socially accepted by imitating and mocking those we grow up around. 
Culture can be characterized into two different types of culture: collectivist cultures and individualist cultures. 
In collectivist cultures, the tendency of people in a given culture is to value the group identity over their individual 
identity. In this culture, group obligations are more important that individual success. Within this type of culture many
different factors are important to the members of the group. People belong to collective cultures so they can feel
important by belonging to the group, interdependent, and to avoid direct conflict. This type of culture is also known as
high - context cultures. High context cultures, according to Tubbs and Moss, are more skilled in reading nonverbal
behaviors and they assume others can do the same. Also, people within this culture tend to speak less and listen more.
As mentioned previously, communication within this culture is more indirect and less explicit. The Japanese culture is
a good example of a collectivist culture and a high-context culture.
The other type of culture, an individualistic culture, involves people who have the tendency to value individual identity
over the identity of the group they belong to. They tend to value their own value over the group's individual. These people
are independent, emphasize personal goals,and communicate directly. In contrast to collectivistic cultures, individualistic
cultures are low-context cultures and emphasize verbal messages and the shared information they encode.

mass communication - personal.


I have never sat down to watch an entire news segment on television. Since I am not a regular news watcher, especially at school, I usually just tune in to the beginning segment where the key stories are highlighted and mentioned. This is a perfect example of how the mass media sets an agenda for the public. They decide what stories are important, how to present them, and how long to keep them in the news. Since these stories are highlighted, these are the stories we view as most important. Once the story is no longer presented on the news, we lose interest in it and move on to the next big thing. This is exactly what I do because I only watch the key segments. 
I remember being in sixth grade, at which point I did not watch any news. It was a regular day at school until we got to lunch time. There was all this buzz in the cafeteria. Rumors were flying around everywhere. I did not really know what was going on, but no one really knew. All I knew was something big happened and my neighbor's mom was taking me home instead of taking the bus. When Joey and I got into the car, the first thing we did was ask his mom what was going on. She told us that someone had crashed two planes into the Twin Towers. I had no idea what she meant by that. It was unimaginable. 
Once I got home I asked my mom, and she told me to turn on the television in order to understand. When I finally turned the t.v. on, almost every station was broadcasting the coverage of the crash. I remember sitting their and just continuously watching the planes fly into the buildings. I was in shock. I was in awe. I could not believe it. But honestly, who could? For several weeks, even months, this was one of the main stories on the news. Even though this was a very serious event and the news stations had every right to continuously show the crash and cover the story, they were still setting the agenda for the public. In this case, this was definitely the top story. But after several weeks, life continued and other things in the world happened. I was very young then, but I imagine that the 9/11 story took the place of other stories. Therefore, as an audience we were watching this story, even though other events were occurring. In this case, the news picked for us which story was most important.

The messages portrayed by the mass media and the mass media themselves play a large role in social construction. Mass media brings a very large and diverse audience together through a shared set of commonalities. Although it may bring people together, it does not necessarily mean it physically brings them together. They just become intuned to the same stories and news coverage, but they still remain autonomous on their living room couch. Because they are alone, the audience becomes vulnerable to the mass media's product, viewpoint, or new story. 
Since mass media's audience tends to be alone and vulnerable, they use their technologies to help persuade those sitting home on their couch alone. Technologies are the physical means of producing, reproducing, and distributing goods, services, and cultural products. They are the ways in which a company presents their information or product. For Fox News Channel, it is how each news story is presented and the physical setting in which it is presented in. The set of Fox News is very patriotic and consistently use blue, red, and white on their stage and in their outfits. People who constantly watch this news station may be persuaded one way or another on a specific issue because of they way the station uses patriotism to present and portray issues. Even though technologies are constantly evolving, if Fox News continues with its patriotic theme, viewers will continue to be persuaded towards patriotism.

GATEKEEPER: a person who, by selecting, changing, and/or rejecting messages, can influence
the flow of information to a receiver or group of receivers. (Tubbs and Moss)
GATEKEEPING: the process through which ideas and information are filtered for
publication. (wikipedia.com).

In mass communication, gatekeeping is an essential aspect, which exists in all types of
mass media. It is important that the publications made by different mass medias get passed
through a chain of people. It is important for information to be approved by more than one person,
which is why gatekeeping exists. A common gatekeeping flow would start with the editor-in-chief,
pass to the senior editor, onto a freelance writer, back to the senior editor, next to an assistant
editor, back to the writer again, onto an art director, then to the managing editor, and finally back
to the editor-in-chief. This complicated process is necessary for finding errors and producing an
accurate product. All of these gatekeepers mentioned have different choices to make, which are influenced by
seven different variables. These variables are economics, legal restrictions, deadlines, ethics,
competition among media, news value, and reaction to feedback.
The term gatekeeping was coined by Kurt Lewin. He used this term to describe a wife or
mother as the person who decides what food ends up on the table for dinner. It later evolved into
the communication context in the 1950's when White applied it to journalism (similar to above). 
According to the University of Twente's website, "In the 1970s McCombs and Shaw took a different direction when they looked at the effects of gatekeepers' decisions. They found the audience learns how much importance to attach to a news item from the emphasis the media place on it. McCombs and Shaw pointed out that the gatekeeping concept is related to the newer concept, agenda-setting. (McCombs et al, 1976). The gatekeeper concept is now 50 years old and has slipped into the language of many disciplines, including gatekeeping in organizations."

rhetoric and public culture - Personal


According to Pierce, a message is rhetorical when produces or encourages change, even if that was not the intended effect of the speaker. In Com 152, we were asked to give both a informational and persuasive speech. Both of these speeches used rhetorical language. The persuasive speech would be an example of a rhetorical message intending to persuade an audience. The informational speech could be an example of a rhetorical message without the intention of creating action. For both of my speeches, I spoke about the non-profit organization Invisible Children and the ongoing war in Northern Uganda. 
For the informational speech, I strictly spoke about important statistics and facts of the war. I explained this war has been ongoing for the last 22 years and it has displaced many people. I mentioned how many of the children are stolen and forced to fight and kill their families and neighbors. The Lord's Resistance Army(LRA) has abducted 66,000 children so far. I mentioned that the war was started by the LRA as a response to the political powers. Throughout this speech, I talked a lot about the effect of the war on the people and how it was such a detrimental experience; however, I never suggested ways the audience could help. 
Instead of using facts and statistics in the persuasive speech, I resorted to explaining ways in which the audience could help. I suggested participating in programs such as Schools for Schools, the Tri campaign, and the book drives. I also mentioned attending the Displace me event, where thousands of people imitate the displaced. This speech was rhetorical because I asked them to help Africa, to make a change, and to take action. Even though I did not do this in the informative speech, it is quite possible change could have come about because it is such an emotional subject.

This picture of the aftermath of hurricane Katrina was displayed in a world newspaper. Hurricane Katrina's episode left many people homeless, injured, and even dead. Many people lost loved ones and all of their belongings. Many people had to relocate for quite some time while their homes were being fixed up. Many people could simply not return to New Orleans due to the sadness involved. Many people never saw it coming. And lastly, many people would call this a tragedy. 
Without much of today's technology, people around the world would not have been able to imagine the tragedy involved. It would have been difficult to view pictures without a camera. It would have been difficult to see helicopter video footage with a news station and a television. It would have been difficult for those who evacuated to evacuate if we did not have hurricane detecting devices. Without technology, this situation would have been completely different. I think there are many people who are thankful that technology was able to help out in this tragedy, even if it was not much help. 
On the other hand, there are certainly people who fill technology was not a help during this tragedy. For some, they cannot understand why technology could not have helped more. They do not understand why people go to school for years on end to study and learn, and the world can still not come up with a way to prevent hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. The fact is we cannot control every part of the PHYSICAL WORLD. Disasters such as these remind us that we do not have complete control over how the physical world acts. We must learn to tolerate its actions and do the best we can when they occcur.

rhetoric and public culture - Definitional

According to wikipedia. com, the social world primarily deals with society and sociology, or the study of society and human behaviors. They say society is society is "a group of humans or other organisms of a single species that is delineated by the bounds of cultural identitysocial solidarity, functional interdependence, or eusociality." With that being said, they also mention that a society is "characterized by patterns of relationships between individuals that share a distinctive culture or institutions." By partaking in a society or the social world, a person is able to achieve and accomplish things he or she could not on his or her own. 
In Pierce's chapter, the social world provides "boundaries, resources, and challenges daily." The social world can be interpreted differently by various types of people. The culture one lives in and the things happening around them will determine their social world. Traveling and emerging ourselves in different cultures allows us to experience different social worlds. Since the social world may involve different customs or traditions, many different emotions can arise from a  person when these are revealed to them. The differences may irritate a person or they could create joy and happiness. The social world has a large effect on our emotions, our actions, and our choices. 
We are so comfortable with our social culture because it is what we grew up with. Most of us are used to eating lunch at school. If we were submersed in the Spanish social culture, we may feel out of place when we would take a break from classes and would come home to eat lunch. It may be uncomfortable to have to go to class afterwards. Our environment with which we grow up in helps determine the norms for our lives.

artifact - small group communication.

Description 2: Woman with Coke. "The pause.....that refreshes at home." "Housework brings that urge to pause and relax in an easy chair. Do it ... with ice-cold Coca-Cola. It adds to relaxations what relaxations always need... pure wholesome refreshment." 



Both of these ads advertise for Coca-cola and suggest why we, as consumers, should drink it. I assume both of these ads were drawn up under the careful consideration of a small group. While one person may have drawn each of these up, it was probably a group decision in picking which ad to use.  
If one person suggested the ad with the baseball, they may argue that both men and women can play baseball; therefore, it appeals to all people, not just women. The person who is arguing for the ad with the woman may argue that women buy the groceries; therefore, if they are advertised on the ad, they will be more likely to buy Coca-Cola when they are at the store.
Throughout this meeting debating the two ads, the other members of the group are probably affected by the judgements of these two people. The two persuaders are probably affecting the other's attitudes, beliefs, and values. Let's say the only way to publish one of the two ads is for a 100% approval from all members of the group. So far, everyone within the group has agreed to publish the baseball ad because it appeals to everyone and not just women, except for one person. While this member wants to publish the woman ad, she gives in to the baseball ad because it is not worth it to her to argue her point. In this instance, she demonstrates groupthink and is influenced by the other members of her group. While she does not necessarily want to publish the baseball ad, it is kind of a lost cause if she is the only one voting for the other ad. Even though she likes the other ad better, the reasoning behind publishing the baseball ad has become clear to her and has helped influence her to publish it instead. 

personal - small group communication.

When working with a small group, an emotional commitment may evolve from all the time spend together working on a common problem. This kind of emotional commitment is known as Cohesiveness, which increases as the attachment to the group becomes stronger. Cohesiveness is defined as "the total field of forces acting on members to remain in the group" by Tubbs and Moss. Many people experience this cohesiveness when they are really passionate about what their group offers or they become extremely interested in their work project. When people can see their work turn in to success, they begin to become more attached to their group. 
I am a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. Our sorority is home to 150 members, including freshman through seniors. While 150 people does not constitute a small group, we are still an exemplary example of cohesiveness. Every single member has had to go through recruitment as a freshman, which has ultimately brought us together. We all know that we were wanted in the sorority and the sorority knows we wanted them. We share a common understanding and love for all the sisters within the sorority and we continually grow closer as we become more involved. 
For example, for fundraising, each of us is expected to work at the Quest Center during an event, a sports game, or a concert. Working with four other girls at the Sports Show, I was part of a small group. At the beginning of the day, it was clear none of us wanted to be there. It was clear we did not want to be serving and making fast food all day. It was clear we did not want to deal with needy and rude customers. 
As the day progressed on, we learned to work together and get to know each other better. Since we got to know each other better, it was easier to pass the time by with conversation and games. While we could all agree the job was no fun, it brought us together and forced us to get to know each other. By the end of the day, we became a more cohesive group within the sorority. While we love all of our sisters, no one will understand the inside jokes from that day or even the experience. Tubbs and Moss say cohesiveness involves "members who enjoy each other's company." That day at the Quest Center, we all enjoyed each other's company.

According to Buzzle.com, "small group communication is, of course, the communication that is
carried out within a small group. A small group is generally defined as a group that consistes of at
least three members and the maximum around twelve to fifteen members."Just like there are four types of nonverbal messages and nonverbal communications, there are also four types of small group communication. The four types are primary groups, casual/social, learning/education, and work groups. Many of these types focus on problem solving and are task oriented groups. According to Tubbs and Moss, some examples of small groups involved in communication are a "student council, a commission investigating the causes of prison riots, a fund-raising committee for a political party, and a tenants' association organized to fight rent increases." 
Even though many small groups may involve problem solving, they certainly do not have to. The first type of small group communication, or primary groups, are the basic groups to which we belong. Some primary groups involve our friends or our childhood friends. These groups are made once we form our social identity and once we realize we belong to a group. 
Once we have established our primary groups, it is easier to belong to social groups, such as teammates, sorority sisters, and classmates. Even though these friendships and acquaintances may not last that long, they will continue to influence us throughout our life. They will determine the way we think and act thirty years from now. The primary and social groups do not necessary involve problem solving because much of the communication involved in these two groups is spontaneous and informal. 
The third type of small group communication involves the learning group. When members of this group come together, they come to teach or learn something about a given subject. Although members of this group come together to solve problems or learn something, they are not in an authoritative position; therefore, they may come up with great ideas, but they cannot put their ideas into actions. 
Work groups usually take place in the context of a job and have specific goals to achieve. Whereas members of the other groups may have had a lot in common, members of this group usually do not have a lot in common except for the assigned task. Another difference between this group and the others is the willingness to work. While it may not have mattered if you didn't participate in the other groups, it matters in this one. Since these group members are often paid for their work, it is important to do the work and do it well.

organizational - personal.


Informal Communication can occur in all aspects of life. In organizational communication, informal communication can also be known as gossip. Gossip can be referred to as "water-cooler talk" and can be passed on through the "grapevine." Informal communication, or gossip, is the person to person communication between two employees of an organization, which often is facilitated by events within the organization.
The summer before my freshman year in college, I worked at Abercrombie & Fitch. Working there, I gained a lot of respect for anyone who works in retail. The store employees many high school and college students, and is usually managed by a college graduate, who has majored in business management. 
Many of the employees work five hour shifts and cannot wait until their shift is over. It is extremely surprising how much each employee knows about one another and the managers. Often times, I would spend my shift folding clothes and working the register with one other person. Working during the day, when most other people are at work too, the store is kind of slow, which allows for gossip time. Also, since many of my co-workers are relatively the same age, it is easy to share stories during slow periods. 
Throughout my summer, I found out alot about the other people I worked with and my managers. Many times it affected how I perceived a certain person or who I spent most of my time talking to. However, I learned to not judge a book by its cover and I also learned to listen quietly while others complained. I was able to avoid my managers on their cranky days and help out as much as possible on days they were willing to pass off jobs. It is clear informal communication can be a positive and negative thing in the workplace. 

organizational - artifact/structure.


In designing my own organization, I am choosing to establish the National Women's Cycling Association (which might already exist). This organization's goal would be to unite all the women cyclists in the nation and bring them together at specific events, such as races, training programs, and conventions. 
In assuming leader, I would establish a supportive communication style within the organization. I would rather help my members out, than yell at them or always tell them they are doing something wrong. Lately, interviewers have consistently asked me what type of leader I am and what qualities I possess. Every time I tell them I do not like to dictate or tell a person exactly how to do something. I like other people to give me their opinions, so I can help them, and the entire group, come up with a plan that works for all of us. In this cycling organization, I would like to help them, support them, and encourage them. 
In designing this organization, there are definitely pros and cons. When employees or members receive support, they are more likely to be motivated to continue working hard and doing well. Encouragement allows them to have self-satisfaction as well. They learn to become confident and self-efficient. This structure of communication may not be good because it may allow members to become over confident. Also, it may give the member a false sense of hope. They might start to think their boss, or the leader, is more of a friend. Therefore, when they do something wrong and have to be disciplined or corrected by the boss, the friendship may be affected.

Culture can be defined in all different ways, but according to dictionary.com culture is defined as "the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic or age group." In organizational communication, there are four different ways to define culture. The four types of culture are tough-macho guy, work-hard-play-hard, bet-your-company, and process culture. 
Tough-macho-guy culture involves those who are put into high risk situations, such as police officers, military personal, and surgeons. These people often have to act tougher than they actually are or tougher than they actually feel in order to get their job done. The name of this culture is extremely stereotypical because it suggests the exclusion of woman. However, it is obvious women can be put in the same high risk situations and men and handle them equally. Often times these people are considered tough because they have to be courageous and brave to enter into the situations they do. 

Work-hard-play-hard cultures focus on sales and making their customers happy. They want to work hard to meet their customers needs. By working hard individually, a person is working to make the company better as a whole. If individuals succeed in the company, the company will improve and succeed as a whole. This relational progress will ultimately make the individual happier, allowing them to continuously work hard. Individuals in this company are usually determined, highly motivated, and initiative taking. Some examples of these cultures are Mary Kay Cosmetics, McDonalds, and IBM. According to the Mary Kay Website, "every day Mary Kay is changing lives of women and children around the world. It is part of the Mary Kay heritage, and we are honored to continue Mary Kay Ash's legacy of making a difference." Mary Kay has individual make-up consultants who strive to make other people's live better. Since they all work towards creating a better business, they are individually happier. 

Bet-your-company cultures endure high risks, but do not see immediate results. The feedback they receive is slow and is therefore not immediate. Some companies that exhibit this culture would be oil companies, architectural firms, and the military. The military was sent into Iraq taking extreme risks, however the feedback from their actions has been slow and minute. It could take years before the military receives the results they want or expect.

Process cultures endure low risks and receive feedback slowly. Often times, these employees do not see the results of their actions while they are still working. These cultures hold long meetings to discuss the best action. Since these cultures include the government and pharmaceutical companies, they must ensure that their action is the best possible action available. If the government implemented a law too quickly, they would soon regret it if something went terribly wrong. They must test the pros and cons of every decision they make to ensure it is plausible.

health- personal.


My mom and I have this tradition to do a girl's shopping weekend every year with her good friend and her daughter (my good friend, Emily). The summer after Emily and I's sophomore year, we were lucky enough to be able to persuade our moms to take us to New York City to go shopping. Throughout the entire weekend, my left wrist was really bothering me. I kept complaining about it throughout the weekend, but everyone just joked it was probably from carrying all the shopping bags. 
When we returned home after our lovely weekend of shopping, I continued to complain about how much my left wrist hurt. My mom said we would continue to keep and eye on it throughout the upcoming week. Well, by the middle of the week I was stuck on the couch watching television because my wrist hurt so badly that I could not move it. Finally, my mom decided it was time to take me to the walk-in clinic to get it looked at. At the walk-in clinic, the doctor took x-rays to see if I had broken anything. When the x-rays came back with no broken bones, the doctor continued to look at my wrist. By the time she got done playing with my wrist, I was bitting my lip and fighting back tears. When the doctor left the room to go check on something, my mom quickly called my pediatrician to get me an appointment. My mom told her what was going on and she said to come over immediately after we got done at the walk-in clinic. 
After the doctor at the walk-in clinic told me to go home take some motrin and put some ice on it, we rushed over to my pediatrician's office. There, my doctor told me to go to the hospital to get some blood work done and to have it looked at it. I ended up spending three days in the hospital with cellulitis, or a virus within my cells. I was later told at the hospital that if I would have gone home like the first doctor told me to, I may have lost my hand and wrist to amputation. 
Completely frustrated by the care we received at the walk-in clinic, my mom wrote them a letter complaining about our doctor and her neglect. She complained about her rude bed-side manner and her diagnosis. She told them how I was clearly in pain when she was examining me and how she continued to turn my wrist in every single way, creating more pain. This is a perfect example of horrible health communication. It is the doctor's responsibility to have good bed-side manners in order to help the patient efficiently and effectively.

On youtube.com, there are many examples of prescription drug commercials. These commercials are a great example of health communication and the importance of communication in healthcare. The Zoloft commercial, often seen on television, starts by describing the symptoms of depression. It says if you don't currently enjoy doing the things you used to or things just don't feel the same, you might suffer from depression. They go on to say that depression is a serious illness, which 20 million Americans suffer from yearly. While the cause of this disease is unknown, it may be related to a chemical inbalance of nerve cells in the brain. The prescription drug, Zoloft, is supposed to correct this inbalance. 
There are many people in the world who disagree with healthcare procedures or refuse to see their doctor or dentist. This is where mass communication comes in. If a person refuses to see their doctor for his or her yearly check up, commercials such as the Zoloft commercial may be helpful. Whereas other commercials can be used as persuasive ads, so can prescription drug commercials. These commercials may just prompt someone who has not seen their doctor in years to go see their doctor about issues they have been having. The commercial shows that once the pill is taken, life can improve and people can feel happy again. If a person can relate to the commercial and see the hope of being happy again, they just might go see their doctor.

As we have seen throughout this class so far, communication can take place in many different settings and falls into many different categories. When dealing with health communication, there are five categories of communication that can be used. According to Corcoran, these five categories are intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, community, and public/mass communication. It may seem surprising that this many types of communication can be used in one broad category of communication, such as health communication. However, it is actually quite easy to picture. 
Imagine any health facility, such as the Boys Town Research Hospital. Lets say you go there because you think your allergies are getting worse and your pre-prescribed prescription is no longer working. After the doctor examines you, he or she must use intrapersonal communication. Using this internal communication, he or she must think to his or herself what medication or treatment would be best in the given situation. He or she must way the pros and cons of the treatment they decide on. Once the doctor has developed a plan, he or she will then portray interpersonal communication, or communication on a personal level. This is seen when the doctor presents his or her findings and diagnosis. This is where you may be presented with a new prescription or told why your old one is currently not working well. 
 Because many doctors work in a family practice or large hospital, before the doctor presents you your diagnosis through interpersonal communication, he may use organizational communication with his colleagues. In this form of communication, your doctor may explain your symptoms and his findings to the rest of the doctors in his practice to make sure they agree with his diagnosis. Another form of organizational communication that may occur, even before the doctors see patients, is the establishment of rules and guidelines on how to act, treat, and decide on a diagnosis. With the help of this organizational communication, the doctors should always be on the same path as each other. 
If you went in to see your doctor about your allergies and he interpersonally communicates to you that your prescription was filled incorrectly with different medication, this may call for community communication. The family practice or hospital may put out a local, public announcement recalling your specific prescription. Even though no harm was done by the incorrect prescription, they want to make sure everyone who is supposed to be taking that prescription is actually taking THAT prescription. 
In larger cases, other than allergy medicines and more similar to an epidemic of some sort, the doctors would have to take certain precautions and use mass communication. In this case, they would have to notify people nationally of the epidemic and what people should do to avoid it or help control it. It is obvious that health communication involves several other types of communication. Since doctors are responsible for their patient's health, good communication is really important when it comes to health.

nonverbal communications - personal.


   The use of nonverbal messages within communication often involves cultural influence. Depending on where you live around the world, nonverbal messages can vary because of personal space. Within the United States, personal space is regarded highly among its citizens. In the States, we like to create what many call a "personal bubble." This personal bubble is considered the 1.5 to 4 feet of personal space around us that we like to keep for ourselves. In contrast to the States, many European countries are more accustomed to intimate distance, or the zero to eighteen inches around them. The reason they use zero to eighteen inches is because they are much more intimate with everyday people, while Americans reserve that space for close friends and family. 
Even those these boundaries are different in various countries, they can often be crossed. For instance, in America we have what we call a "close talker," or somebody who invades the personal bubble. When somebody decides to talk very close to my face, my first reaction is to back away. I know this because it happens quite frequently to me because my dad is a close talker. It is really funny because when he gets so close to talk, I back away, and then I get in trouble for "not listening" and walking away. 
It is one thing when a close talker is talking to you, but it also can be fun to watch a close talker from an observing position. Knowing my father is a close talker, it is fun to watch him in certain situations and see how other people react. When we are at my cottage and he is talking to my uncle, they are really close, but my uncle does not back away. This may because my uncle has known my father for many years and is completely comfortable with him being that close. 
When my dad talks to colleagues at a work party, it is a completely different story. Many times when he gets in his employee's face, he or she starts to back away or fidget with his or her hands. 
I think it is fun to think about close talkers in different cultures. Would it be more beneficial for my dad to run an international company where he communicates with Europeans more often? Would they be more open to his tendencies as a close talker?

Often times, advertisement can be used as a form of nonverbal communication in today's society. Nonverbal communication can be used to replace verbal messages or communication, it reinforces or adds to verbal communication, and it can be a contradictory sign to verbal messages. The main use of nonverbal communication in advertisement is to replace verbal communication or add to it. 
This advertisement is advertising dance lessons. If this advertisement were placed on a billboard somewhere along the highway, it would take the place of verbal communication. I don't know about you, but I would find it kind of weird and unproductive for someone to be standing along the highway with a megaphone advertising dance lessons. In this instance, nonverbal communication is more effective for the company and easier for the drivers to pay attention to/notice. If these dance lessons were also advertised on a radio broadcast or commercial on the radio, then this advertisement would be in addition to verbal communication. 
Either way, advertisements are a great form of nonverbal communication. Creative and decorative, they draw attention from people without the use of spoken word or vocalizations. They allow people the ability to be focused on two different things, such as driving and learning about dance lessons from the billboard. In addition to a great form of advertisement, nonverbal communication also allows for multitasking in our busy lives.

Verbal/nonvocal messages involve words, but they are not spoken or vocalized. These words may be in the written form. 
Nonverbal/vocal messages are vocalizations that do not involve words, or that involve nonspecific words. These messages may include groans or vocalizations, such as "uh."
Nonverbal/nonvocal messages are gestures and appearances which do not involves sounds. Some examples of these messages may be a high five or a hand wave. 
Verbal/Vocal messages involve spoken word communication. 

According to www2.andrews.edu, "nonverbal communications involves those nonverbal stimuli in a communication setting that are generated by both the source [speaker] and his or her use of the environment and that have potential message value for the source or receiver [listener]."
